Homepage > Semester Information > Creative Arts

Facilitator: Nelleke
When: Mondays, 9AM - 12PM
Location: Imagination Hub
Cost: Free
Requirements: Some knowledge of upcycling materials
Class Size: Up to 6 participants

What to Expect

Turn everyday “waste” into art! In this hands-on class, you’ll collaborate on group upcycling projects and develop your own eco-craft pieces. Expect a mix of creative brainstorming, guided making, and opportunities to share your work and process with others.

What to Bring

  • Any clean, recyclable materials you’d like to upcycle (bottles, fabric scraps, paper, etc.)

  • Basic craft tools if you have them (scissors, glue, paint brushes)—otherwise, supplies are provided

What You’ll Learn

  • Global Recycling Practices: Understand the impact of recycling in New Zealand and beyond

  • Sustainability approaches: Explore how local businesses and communities incorporate reuse into daily life

  • Field Visits: (Optional) Join outings to see real-world recycling in action

  • Personal Sustainability Plan: Craft a strategy to reduce waste and upcycle at home

  • Collaborative Making: Collaborate to create a community art piece from recycled materials

  • Outreach Skills: Partner with artists or groups to educate others about eco-friendly practices

Benefits for You

You will learn how to turn old or throw-away items into something new and useful. You will find creative ways to reuse things that might otherwise go in the rubbish. This helps you see value in everyday items. You’ll practice using your hands by cutting, gluing, and putting things together. Making art this way can be relaxing, good for the environment, and doesn’t cost much. You’ll play with colour, texture, and shape to make something beautiful. You can also share your ideas and creations with others in the group. It’s a great way to feel proud while helping to reduce waste.
